Policeman refuses to shake hands with his colleague - because she is a woman

Woman refused handshake: a muslim police officer from rhineland-palatinate who refused to shake hands with a female colleague must pay a fine of 1000 euros. He will not be released, as the police prasidium koblenz announced on friday.

In may 2017, the officer refused to shake hands with a female colleague at his command ceremony in montabaur for religious reasons. He bowed according to the rhineland-palatinate ministry of the interior only with his hand on his heart. This put him in the headlines nationwide.

Declaration signed

Since the lifetime officer had no criminal or disciplinary record, he could only be dismissed if he stuck to his previous attitude, the police prasidium explained. However, the policeman had signed a declaration stating that he was committed to the free democratic basic order and that he regarded women as equals without exception or reservation.

Therefore, he will no longer refuse a handshake to all women as a sign of respect and in recognition of their equality. "In the event of a breach of his official and loyalty obligations, he must expect to be removed from the service", he continued.
