Plans for a major tennis tournament in berlin are becoming more concrete. On the LTTC rot-weib facility with the steffi-graf stadium, a tournament could be held on grass in preparation for wimbledon as early as next year.
"We have been in talks for months with representatives of the club, with the WTA and with wimbledon. Berlin is an absolutely interesting candidate," the austrian edwin weindorfer told the german press agency. With his marketing agency emotion, weindorfer is, among other things, the licensee of the women’s tournament currently taking place in mallorca. The men’s event at the weissenhof in stuttgart is also the responsibility of the tournament director from graz.
"We are in the process of looking for another venue for the tournament in mallorca, because we have other plans there. If we could transfer this license to berlin, that would be a good solution," weindorfer said. A decision on this is to be made at the beginning of july during the grass court classic in wimbledon.
Previously, the "bild" newspaper had reported on this and quoted red-white sports director markus zoecke with the words: "i cannot confirm this as it stands. But it is true that we have such planes. If something like this is to work, it has to be a hit for the next 20 or 30 years."Between 1979 and 2008 the german open of the ladies took place in the berlin district grunewald.
In september 2016, the german davis cup team played the relegation duel with poland there – both on sand. The members of the association had to agree to a rededication from sand to grass. Recently there had been repeated speculation about the return of an international tournament to berlin. In the past, the senate of berlin had also signaled its support and confirmed its interest in holding a tournament in berlin again.
